Odisha Garima Scheme:-

The government of Odisha will offer rewards to around 20,000 sanitary personnel and their families, servicing a population of one lakh people, under this program. On Friday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched “GARIMA” to defend sanitation workers’ safety and dignity. This initiative would help 20,000 sanitation workers and their families, totaling 1 lakh individuals. A corpus fund of Rs. 50 crore will be established, as will a State Commission for Core Sanitation Workers. The initiative would be implemented throughout Odisha. This is a great initiative by the state government for the well-being of sanitary workers, and it has received widespread appreciation across the country.

The strategy is the first in India to institutionalize and regulate core sanitation services, as well as to provide core sanitation personnel and their families with service-level benefits, social security, and financial rewards. The strategy uses a statewide survey to identify and register key sanitary staff, forces sewage suppliers to register, and supplies necessary machinery and PPEs to ensure working safety.

The sanitation workers will also receive skill-building training as part of the strategy. They will also have access to counseling to learn new skills and financial assistance if they choose a different job.

Some of the benefits include specific remuneration for core sanitation work, risk and hardship allowances, financial assistance to families in the event of an accident or injury, home grants, and the purchase of two-wheelers for 90% of the cost. Furthermore, essential sanitation staff and their families will be eligible for retirement, post-service benefits, and a sickness allowance.
