India Samudrayaan Mission 2023

The India Samudrayaan Mission is the first manned mission to explore the deep ocean. The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) approved the mission in June 2021 and the mission is scheduled to launch in 2026. The objective of this mission is to send three people to a depth of 6 kilometres into the ocean. This mission will help in studying deep ocean resources and conducting biodiversity assessments.

The submersible will be used to explore biodiversity while keeping the marine ecosystem untouched. The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in Chennai is designing and developing the vehicle, called “Matsya 6000”. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 5000 crore.

The Samudrayaan Mission joins the US, Russia, France, Japan, and China as nations with the technology and vehicles to carry out subsea activities.

The Deep Ocean Mission was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on June 16, 2021.

The submarine is designed to withstand the pressure and harsh conditions of the deep sea. It can work for 12 hours under normal conditions and 96 hours in an emergency.
