What is BharOS:-
Concerned about multinational tech firms using Indian citizens’ data and the lack of viable alternatives for the masses when it comes to Google, the government of India wanted to develop an indigenous mobile operating system that could compete with Google’s Android OS while also prioritizing privacy and security.
To that effect, IIT-Madras recently revealed that one of its incubator businesses, BharOS or Bharat OS, has created a new home-grown operating system. BharOS promises to be a more secure and private mobile operating system, and it is aimed at India’s 100 million smartphone users, who have no choice but to use American-owned and operated Android and iOS.
What is BharOS
Bhar OS is an Indian government-funded project to develop a free and open-source operating system (OS). The project aims to reduce the dependence on foreign OS in smartphones and promote the use of locally developed technology.
Bhar OS includes No Default Apps (NDA). This signifies that there are no pre-installed applications. Users can install the apps they choose. The goal is to give consumers greater control over the permissions that applications have on their devices by allowing them to only download apps that they trust to access specific functions or data on their devices.
The operating system grants access to trusted apps via organization-specific Private App Store Services (PASS). A PASS grants access to a selected list of applications that have been properly verified and are believed to fulfill specific security and privacy criteria.
The Company Behind BharOS
JandK Operations Private Limited (JandKops) created the BharOS, which was incubated by IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, a Section 8 (Not for Profit) Company formed by IIT Madras. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India funds the Foundation through its National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NMICPS).

“IIT Madras looks forward to working closely with many more private industries, government agencies, strategic agencies, and telecom service providers to increase the usage and adoption of BharOS in our country,” he said in a statement.
How this OS is different from Android and Apple iOS?
BharOS is technically quite similar to Android because they share the same fundamentals. Because BharOS is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project), the features and methodology used by both operating systems are virtually the same. BharOS differs from Android in that it is devoid of Google Services and Apps. Google has collected data through its preinstalled applications and services, often without expressly asking the user. Similarly, other Google Play applications share data with third-party services. BharOS does not have any such preinstalled services or applications, making it more secure.
How to install BharOS?
There is currently no information about how people may obtain BharOS. Removing an operating system and installing a new one on mobile devices is a risky business that even the most seasoned computer aficionados would hesitate to try.
So, in all probability, BharOS will be confined to new and forthcoming devices, with no official support for existing devices. Furthermore, BharOS is presently only available to organizations with high privacy and security needs, as well as “whose users handle sensitive information that requires confidential communications on restricted apps on mobiles.” The operating system is unlikely to be available to the general public very soon.
It is predicted that OS developers will work with OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) to build smartphones that run BharOS in the future.
Who is using Bhar OS currently?
According to reports, BharOS Services are presently being tested by several firms with tight privacy and security standards, and whose users handle sensitive information that requires secret communication on limited mobile apps. Such consumers demand private cloud services delivered via private 5G networks.
How will apps work on BharOS?
BharOS will not have as many default apps as Android. Instead, users will be able to select whatever applications they wish to use on their own devices. It will also have its own app store where users can download and install apps, removing the requirement for the Google App Store.
There is also a chance that it will make it easier for consumers to sideload apps than Android does. There is also a chance that, with the exception of a few necessary apps, BharOS would prioritize indigenously built software or apps made with a specific focus on India and the Indian people.
Which is better BharOS or Android?
Actually, it is not that straightforward. BharOS offers several advantages, particularly in terms of security and privacy. However, Android has a few legacy advantages that users may find difficult to give up. Android genuinely supports a broad range of devices and technology, from a basic smartphone costing Rs 6000-7000 or less to a complicated, and expensive, foldable smartphone costing more than Rs 100,000. We do not know what kind of devices BharOS will support.
Another benefit is that because Android has a large user base, bugs, and issues are swiftly reported and resolved. bugs in the Android OS are quite rare; most bugs appear when OEMs attempt to layer their own UI on top of Android. We also do not sure how regularly BharOS will receive security or generational upgrades.
When will BharOS be Released?
The BharOS developers have not revealed any information about its release date or supported smartphones. However, it is expected that the developers will work with smartphone manufacturers to create BharOS-powered devices in the near future.
